In September 2014, Hurricane Odile slammed Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, causing devastating damage to restaurants, hotels, and homes for miles along the coast. Today, however, little more than a year later, the city of Cabo San Lucas has mostly recovered from Odile, and it is once again a lively and beautiful city that thrives on its popular tourism scene. It’s time to plan your next getaway, and discover why Cabo San Lucas is the place to be this winter.
1. The Weather is Sublime
During the dog days of summer, Mexico is likely one of the last places you would want to visit. For a winter vacation, however, Cabo San Lucas is an ideal location for its steady, balmy temperatures and almost guaranteed sunshine. Enjoy wearing t-shirts and sundresses in 75-degree weather throughout January and February, and never worry about a rained-out beach day for the duration of your visit.
2. The Resorts are Stunning
As a city more or less fueled by tourism, Cabo San Lucas is full of excellent hotels and resorts, many of which are right on the beach. Competition is high in the city’s tourism industry, so resort prices may be remarkably more affordable than you would expect. If you prefer a quieter, more intimate setting, there are plenty of quaint bed-and-breakfasts and inns outside the hustle and bustle of the city life to choose from.
3. The Nightlife is Always in Full Swing
Cabo San Lucas is renowned for its swinging nightlife, with groovy clubs, one-of-a-kind bars, and the dazzling Luxury Avenue Mall located right on the beach. If partying at night just isn’t your cup of tea, you can take a ride down the 20 mile Corridor to Cabo San Lucas’ neighbor, San Jose del Cabo, and visit some of the unique shops, boutiques, cafes, and spas that the sophisticated San Jose del Cabo is known for.
4. The Tourist Attractions are Unforgettable
Don’t worry, you don’t have to spend an hour sightseeing if you don’t want to—although you can check out El Arco, a spectacular rock formation just off Baja Peninsula, and maybe even get up close to a whale if you come at the right time of year. Cabo San Lucas is home to a number of golf resorts just outside the city, and you can always go surfing or swimming, bring your catch of the day to a local restaurant and have them cook it up for you, or plan a romantic weekend getaway complete with a visit to Lover’s Beach.
5. The City is Safe
As far as crime goes, Cabo San Lucas is among the safest vacation destinations in the world. There are some things to look out for, however, when you get there. The undercurrent can be very strong at times, so you should never swim at a beach that isn’t designated for swimming. Make sure to bring along sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat, especially if you are from a colder, cloudy climate. And follow basic safety precautions, like keeping your wallet on your person at all times.
